We'll probably still be using buds for unusual trading just because a single trade with 250 keys is pretty stupid if it could be done with 25 buds.

True, but it is an interesting thing to note regardless.

Keys are a better "main" currency. They're much more stable and backed up over buds. This is a pretty good read about the state of the tf2 economy. http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=417605031

I remember the times when keys were 2 refined. Now they're 20.

I don't really get how buds were a currency in a first place.......it's a hat. YA WEAR IT.
keys and refined are understanable because they make new items. (Refined makes hats, keys makes unusuals, unique hats, stranges, chemistry kits, strangifiers, etc.)
buds do not produce anything.(unless youre going to be that one person to make a craft hat crafted from 2 buds to prove me wrong, which then Ill still be techniccley right.)

Buds were (and still are, seeing as how the number of them never changed) and were valued at a very steady rate for years. This lead them being used in lieu of keys because 1 bud = ~30 keys. For many unusual trades it was easier to give 4 buds than 120 keys (try counting anything more than about 16 keys in a trade window, it is annoying).

The price of buds went down due to the cumulative effect of sellers undercutting each other's prices. People would offer them for 29 keys instead of 30 keys so they would get more buyers. Other sellers then began to sell at 28, then 27, then 26 and so on and so forth until the market crashed. If it was a perfect market with better control, as more keys were bought from the Mann Co. Store and not used for uncratings the value of buds would have gone up in terms of keys (more keys available while the total number of buds remained constant).
